February Check-in: How’s your New Year’s Resolution Going?

Feb 01, 2020

Like so many, your New Year’s resolution may involve increasing your physical activity. And like so many, you may have already given up or not even started. According to Forbes magazine, less than 25% of people keep their resolution after only 30 days. We know that getting regular exercise is an important aspect of our health, so why do so many give up early? Robinet Physical Therapy is here to tell you that you don’t have to be part of that 25%.

Why physical activity? There are many benefits of physical activity and just as many excuses to avoid it.  Do you have a weight loss goal but can’t seem to make it to the gym? No worries. There are plenty of ways to get more activity throughout your day that don’t require a gym membership like taking the stairs at work or parking further away at the grocery store. Winter blues kicking in? Exercise releases endorphins which improves your mood and helps to prevent anxiety and depression. Diagnosed with high blood pressure? Playing pickleball, going for a brisk walk, and taking a yoga class are all types of exercise that can help prevent and manage diseases and health conditions like high blood pressure, stroke, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, and several types of cancer. Did you know that exercise helps improve your sleep? It’s true, regular exercise leads to better quality, more restful sleep. If that is not reason enough, daily exercise increases energy levels, benefits physical intimacy and is a great way to be social and have fun! So find something you enjoy because if it’s fun, you will keep doing it!

Still not sure if you’ll be able to stick with it? Put a plan in place. Make sure you know why you want to make a change and remind yourself of that every day. Is your goal concrete and measurable? Can you track your progress and see your improvement? Who will be on your team as you work towards your goals? How will you celebrate your victories? Having a plan and people to support you is important in helping you stick with your resolution.

Perhaps pain is preventing you from sticking with your plan and achieving your resolution.
